wild...ripoffs?

Heard a song about a month ago on the radio I couldn't place it but had heard it before, the DJ said it was Arcade Fire's Wake up from the movie Where the wild things are. I thought, "why are they playing a song from a movie that came out years ago and didn't Eddie Vedder do the whole soundtrack to that movie?". Well I was thinking of another movie with a similar name called Into the Wild , but it got me to thinking of how similar the story lines to both movies are. I haven't seen either movie and haven't read that Jon Krakauer book and may have read Where the wild things are when i was a kid but i sure as hell don't remember it but as much as i can piece together without reading or seeing the movie the only differce in story line is instead of dumb monsters you get Vince Vaughn and a piece of cake instead of wild potato root. Not only are the movies similar but the aforementioned song by arcade fire

has a very similar guitar riff to the QOTSA regular john song, but the biggest rip off has to be Green Day ripping off the guitar solo to 21 guns from Full house.

Whats my point and how does Kimmie Gibbler fit into all this? Well, I know that I will not see any of those movies unless its the late night movie on SuperCine. Decisión crítica was the dubbed movie of the nite last nite, nothing but quality.

New Deftones Song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's been quite awhile since we've heard anything new from the Deftones. Word is that they scrapped the album they were working on before their bass player got into a car accident. However they are working on another album with former Quicksand bassist Sergio Vega filling in. I'm guessing this song "Rocket Skates" is from that as yet untitled album, but who knows. Haven't heard anything about a release date either. The band have been playing some shows, opening for Slipknot (including one here in San Jose that i couldn't go to).
As for the song, I think it's kinda cool. Obviously this isn't the best quality, but it's got a cool sound to it.

New Converge Video...Make A Me A Dizzy!

So i went to Best Buy today and picked up the new Converge album Axe To Fall, and to no one's surprise, it's amazing! Actually i wasn't too surprised because it leaked a few weeks ago so i heard it early. Still, i paid my money for it because, well, these guys deserve it.
And the point of all of this is...? Nothing, except the fact that their new video for the title track is insane. Like, hopefully you haven't had too much to drink when you watch it, cause you may yak all over your computer. So after that great endorsement, give it a looksie, OK?

Are The Hot Boys Really Coming Back?

Just saw an interview with Juvenile talking about a possible Hot Boys reunion album. He's confident that it will happen soon, possibly next year. There have been rumours of this for a few years now, so I'll believe it when I see it. The bad news is it sounds like it will only be 3 of the four members. It doesn't look like Turk is getting outta jail anytime soon. Still, it sounds like there is a little bit of hope here.
Still I have to wonder if Wayne is really down to do this. I mean he blew up big in the last few years. He doesn't really need this, right? If this does happen, I would love to see Mannie Fresh involved. What would a real reunion be without his beats behind them?
What we know for sure is that Juvenile and B.G. are both releasing albums in November. So, there's that. Check out a song that B.G., Wayne and Juvie did that may or may not end up on B.G.'s album. I hate the chorus, like, alot. But Juvie's flow saves this whole thing.

Nirvana News...No, Really

Yeah, great stuff. What's also great is the new Nirvana releases coming out next month.
First off is the 20th Anniversary of the Bleach album. It's getting remastered, but that's not all. It comes with a bonus live album recorded in Oregon in 1990. Sounds really cool to me.
As if that wasn't enough, a live DVD is coming out the same day, recorded from the Reading Festival in 1992. This was at the time where Nirvana-Mania was insane too. As a sick Nirvana fan, both of these releases are must haves in my opinion. Plus, I'm not sure how much of this unreleased stuff is left so enjoy it while you can.
Now, everyone all at once: "Thanks, Courtney"!!

All Hail Phantasio!

Thank the good Lord for WWE Classics On Demand. Without it, I never would have seen what I saw today. To be honest, I thought I knew about every lame WWF gimmick wrestler that failed. Apparently not. This is Phantasio. Not only is he a wrestler, but he's also a magician! This thing got over like a fart in church, as this is Phantasio's one and only WWF match. Enjoy.

Freddy's Back

I am not sure if this is old news but I just found out about it today. In a desperate effort to try and never create something new, Hollywood is resurrecting one of my old faves, Nightmare on Elm Street. I don't think that I am alone in here in saying that the original Elm Street was a classic, and it made us all scared to fall asleep. Though the subsequent movies got a little silly (Freddy as a Pizza?) the first one was well-paced, creepy, and brilliant. Plus Johnny Depp got massacred.

This the poster revealed at comic-con. No trailer yet, but we will be vigilant and put one up when it comes. Freddy is no longer being played by Robert Englund. Jackie Earle Haley, most widely known as playing Rorschach in the Watchman is donning the hat and blades. Here's hoping it is awesome.

Maybe Rap Music Doesn't Completely Suck After All

For the last few years, I've been pretty distant from rap music. I still listen to some stuff from time to time, but i didn't have that same excitement as i once had. I thought maybe I was just getting older. But I think it was just that I didn't hear anybody that was doing anything interesting.
That has all changed now that I've discovered Drake. Now, I know I'm not breaking any new ground with this. I'd heard he was supposed to be the next big thing for a little while now, but I was skeptical. I've heard that before. But after hearing a few of his rhymes, i can say he's for real. I like that he's not the stereotypical rapper. He's got a different vibe to him. After the jump, check out a few of his songs and let us know what you think.

The first one is a track called "Ignorant Shit" feat. Lil Wayne. Wayne does his best to follow Drake, but you can tell who wins here.

This next song is with Young Jeezy and (of course) Wayne. Once again, Drake murders this shit.

This is a song with Jay Z called "Off That". Unfortunately, Drake doesn't have a verse on the song, he's only on the hook. Hey Jay, smart move.

I had to include the "Every Girl" remix which features a bunch of Young Money rappers. Good stuff here, and Wayne's actually not as annoying as he sometimes can be.

What, new Baroness Too?

Uh, yeah. There's a new Baroness record coming in October as well. In fact, the first two songs from the new album are up on the band's Myspace page right now. To answer your question, yes, there is still a Myspace. I think the songs are killer because, well, it's Baroness. Baltimore and I saw them open for Clutch last month and lets just say they punished. Can't wait for the Blue Record. October is shaping up to rule.

A New Converge Song For That Ass

Wow, things have been a little slow 'round here lately, huh? I'll take the blame for that. But what better way to come back than to talk about the new Converge song "Dark Horse". I don't know about you, but I think it's pretty fucking sweet. That riff is crazy good. See for yourself, yo. By the way, their new album Axe To Fall is coming out in October. Is is October yet?

RAAAAAAAANDY!

Who is the hottest up and coming comedian? If you say Seth Rogen you are so last year (amybe even 3 years ago). Seht Rogen has had his day in the sun and those days are numbered. After all, he only has one character, loser Jewish guy who miraculously scores with all kinds of hot chicks.

Jack Black? What, are you kidding me?

Dane Cook? Okay just shut up.

The answer is Aziz Ansari. You may have seen him as an intern on Scrubs, or as the only really good part of the new show Parks and Recreation with Amy Poehler. He plays the assistant who is trying to weasel his way into government from the very bottom. He has also done some stand-up.

Currently he is in the new Judd Apatow movie Funny People playing a comedian named Raaaaaaaandy, who is this cocky dancing stand-up with his own DJ. Check it out and get ready to laugh your dicks off!!!

Okay, Okay, I'm An Asshole

Okay, so maybe my "tribute" to Michael Jackson was a little rude. But hey I love Weird Al. So if I can be serious for a minute, here's a video of Local H playing "Summer Of Boats". It's a depressing song, but the line about how life "is perfectly sadder now" seems to be ringing in my head. I mean, shit Michael Jackson died!!! Also, Farrah Fawcett, who wasn't really a name for me growing up but I still knew of her legend. Not to mention Ed McMahon died this week as well. It's been a crazy week of loss. Respect to all three. I'm sure I'll be back soon with a stupid wrestling post or a ridiculous metal video from 20 years ago. For now, we mourn, bitches!

Michael Jackson, RIP

Holy shit! Michael Jackson is gone. It wouldn't be right if we here at CCL didn't pay our respects. I mean, growing up, who was bigger than Michael? In a world with bullshit like Lady Gaga, Michael was an innovator. I still think "Thriller" is the greatest video ever made. Oh, and "Billie Jean"? Come on, how incredible was that as a kid? Personally, I'm gonna remember Michael the way he looked during the Thriller years and not whatever the hell it was he turned into in later years.
I could write for the next few hours putting over how great Michael was, but instead, let's just enjoy his work the way it was meant to be enjoyed. RIP MJ. This one's for you.

Fun Cover Songs For No Reason

Hey, yo! So how about a few cover songs huh? Well, two are covers, the other is more of a mash up i guess. First up is a girl named Anya Marina covering "Whatever You Like" by T.I. Kinda funny.

Okay so I found this sweet power metal version of Katy Perry's "I Kissed A Girl". If you were wondering how that song could become amazing, here's your answer:

There's a good chance you've heard this last one, but whatever. Who's reading this anyway, right? A pretty awful band called The Fray covering Kanye West's "Heartless". Weird thing is I like this version better than the original. You decide. I'm done.

I'm Back...With New Jay Z!

Holy shit, we still doing this blog thing? Good, cause I gots a lil' somethin for dat ass. So anyone remember Jay Z? Big name rapper, he be Big Pimpin and spending G's. Yeah, him. So he's got a new album coming out on September 11th called The Blueprint 3. Here's the run-down: The first Blueprint was a classic. The second one, not so much. But I like the idea of this new song. It's called "Death Of Auto-Tune". Hopefully this leads to a trend throughout the music industry and this whole Auto-Tune bullshit dies and T-Pain finds himself homeless. If not, we may be stuck with dreck like this for a few more years. Ugh! Anyways, check out the track. I kinda likes it.

The End of the World? Even for Cockroaches?

For those of you who do not know, I am in seminary, but it is not like you think. I am not on a mission to make converts for the Army of God. Rather I am here to recruit for Jesus’s Navy, which is way cooler, with better hats. Anyway in my ongoing quest to bring pop culture into religion and religion into pop culture, this week we are talking Apocalypse.

Apocalyptic writing was really popular around the time of Jesus from about 200 BC to 200 AD. It featured revelations where people would be recued from the shit sandwich situation that they were in by a divine presence that would judge the evil save the righteous. If you were a subject of Greco-Roman rule you’d want to be saved too. After all, they feed people to lions and nail them to trees. It is during this time that most of the New Testament was written including the book of Revelation.

Fast forward to the present day. People still think that this apocalypse is right around the corner. The world has been perpetually ending for 2000 years, so we must be getting close right? With this in mind let’s watch some music videos. YAY!

Got to start with the theme song for the Apocalypse. Don’t forget to yell out Leonard Bernstein.

Okay, now let’s get serious. Tool serious. In 1996 Tool released this song about the destruction of L.A. brought about a vengeful Mother Nature who he calls Mom. The term Aenima is a play on the concept of an enema (flushing it all away) and the theological concept of anima which is best described as a soul. The lyrics are really cool. The video? Well, its tool so get ready for some creepy animation.

Depressed? Angry? Hey the Apocalypse is not all that bad. Prince has a good plan, dance. Remember when all Prince cared about was dancing and having a good time, even in the face of a nuclear meltdown? Those were the days. In 1983, the concept of 1999 seemed a long way off. Unimaginable even. Then, it came and went and nothing really happened. This was a common problem 2000 years ago when grand predictions of the Second Coming never happened. It killed the genre of apocalyptic literature, and continues to bring about anti-climatic New Year’s parties. Which just goes to show you how ridiculous fearing the Apocalypse is. Still, like Prince instructs, we should forget our worries and Get It On. Awwww yeah.

Okay, lets get it started. The Electric Angels. Of course you remember them. Anyway, here's a little "Rattlesnake Kisses" for that ass. See if you can spot the famous actress dancing in the video. Here's a hint: It's not Bea Arthur (too soon?).

And now for something COMPLETELY different. Yes, kids, it's Crowbar. I always dug this song. Soooo sloooow. And so incredible. Not much to the video, but there really doesn't have to be.

Okay, it's the grand finale ladies and gents. We're gonna end this with a little Ratt. Why? Because it's RATT!!!! This is the video for "Back For More". I loved Ratt as a kid. Not only do you get Tawny Kitaen, but check out the 2 cops in the middle of the video. Enjoy!

Yap'n bout the Cap'n

If you had to pick a cereal that personified everything that that parents and nutritionists believe is wrong and evil with the world of cereal today, you could not do better than Cap’n Crunch.  It possesses every element of cereal deviation.  It is almost like it was created just to challenge parents into buying the worst possible thing to start off their child’s day.

First of all it bears no resemblance to actual cereal grains.  If I asked you what it was made from, corn, wheat, rice, or oats, what would you pick?  You can’t tell.  It is definitely puffed something, but who knows what that is.  Funny that this cereal is made by Quaker (yes that Quaker) which is also known for making the most cerealy cereal, Quaker Oats.

Secondly, and most important for its status as “bad” kid’s cereal, is its sugar content.  Ah yes, loaded with sugar in every bite.  12 grams per serving for Regular or Crunchberries Cap’n Crunch.  Switch to Peanut Butter and the sugar content drops to 8 grams.  This may not seem so bad by today’s standards, but realize that this was one of the first breakfast cereals to come out with such massive sugar content.  It was released in 1963!  It set the bar so high (or low depending on your viewpoint) that other companies had to follow suit.  By comparison Fruity Pebbles also has 12 grams, a parent-friendly choice of Kix has 2 grams, and the seemingly nutritious Smart Start has 14 grams.  Not one to disappoint, the Cap'n comes with a fuckofalot sugar first thing in the morning.

Thirdly, it features a easily recognizable mascot, the lovable Cap’n (full name and I am not making this up: Captain Horatio Magellan Crunch), which has been calling children for years with his siren song of crunchy delight.  He is so iconic as the embodiment of all that is wrong with cereal that artist Dick Detzner put the Cap’n in the Judas seat in his reproduction of “The Last Supper” called “The Last Pancake Breakfast”.

What am I on here, fourthly?  Fourthly, we got to talk about the crunch.  The titular element of the cereal has its advantages and disadvantages.  Crunchiness is obviously a great characteristic for a cereal to have.  The ad-men at Quaker knew this and touted its appeal by featuring the lovable Soggies.  If you don’t remember the Soggies, they were a race of wet milk-like creatures that would prematurely turn cereal soggy.  If you have ever had a bowl of Honey Bunches of Oats you know how dastardly their effect it.  The only thing that could defeat the Soggies was a bowl of un-soggable Cap’n Crunch with “CRUNCH POWER”.

On the flip side, it tears up the roof of your mouth.  So, there is a give and take.

Lastly flavors.  Our good Cap’n is constantly coming up with new and different flavors, and most of these are completely made up.  I hate to be the one to break this to you but there is no such thing as a “Crunch Berry” much less a “Choco Donut”.  To be honest Cap’n Crunch invented more flavor combinations than probably any other cereal in the history of cereal (except maybe Quaker Oatmeal, but at least those flavors have some basis in reality).  All told there have been about 30 iterations of Cap’n Crunch in some form or another.  Here are a few from the Cap’n Crunch Wiki...

§                     Cap’n Crunch Crunch Berries A Cap’n Crunch Crunch Berries version of the cereal was created in 1967 and also contained spherical pieces in red, intended to represent berries, and a mascot was introduced called the Crunch Berry Beast. In the ’90s, two additional colors of the Crunchberries (blue and purple) were added to the mix and then a third (green) in 2002. All are flavored the same, regardless of color.

§                     Peanut Butter Crunch Peanut Butter Crunch would follow two years later in 1969, with a large elephant named Smedley as its mascot; according to sales charts, this version was the most successful at the time.

§                     Punch Crunch, Vanilly Crunch, Cinnamon Crunch Three more editions were issued in the early ’70s -- Punch Crunch, Vanilly Crunch, and Jean LaFoote’s Cinnamon Crunch -- but were later discontinued. Punch Crunch was fruit-flavored cereal rings, and the mascot was sailor-clad hippopotamus named Harry.

§                     Choco Crunch In 1982, a variant called Choco Crunch, featuring the mascot "Chockle the Blob", was introduced. This version contained the yellow corn squares, plus chocolate flavored pieces similar to Crunch Berries. Recently, the "Choco Crunch" brand was reintroduced, but this time consisting of chocolate flavored corn squares, unlike the original version, which was a mix of yellow corn squares and chocolate puffs.

§

Christmas Crunch A special edition named Christmas Crunch was first released for the 1988 holiday season and contained Cap’n Crunch with red and green Crunch Berries in a green box with the Cap’n wearing a Santa Claus hat (originally also containing a toy or Christmas tree ornament inside the box).  This variety is now only available currently in certain regions of the United States (and was recently changed to a gold box).

§                     Oops, All Berries First released in 1997 another special edition was “Oops! All Berries” containing nothing but the strawberry flavored Crunch Berries and none of the corn squares.

§                     Galactic Crunch A discontinued version which featured space-related marshmallows.

§                     Choco Doughnuts A discontinued version which featured chocolate flavored doughnut shaped cereal with candy sprinkles

§                     Home Run Crunch A limited edition version of the cereal. It has the flavor of Berry Crunch but the pieces of the cereal are shaped as bats and balls.

§                     Cap'n Crunch's Mystery Volcano Crunch Red and yellow fruit flavored berries with "'free' packet of lava rocks that pop in milk!"

§                     Cap'n Crunch's Oops! Smashed Berries Oops! All Berries cereal with flat berries that the kids smashed

§                     Cap'n Crunch's CoZmic Crunch Star shaped berries with "'free' orange space dust that turns milk green"

FOR MORE BOX ART CLICK HERE

So if you are having a mad sugar cereal craving and also a desire to raw up the roof of your mouth, you cannot do much better than the old standby.  Often imitated, never duplicated, Cap’n Crunch.

Local H News

It's official: there's a Local H DVD coming out. When, I don't know. But there's a trailer that was just released today. It looks like it will be the band performing their 12 Angry Months album all the way through, with interviews with the band also. It looks like its called 68 Angry Minutes. This sounds like a must have, especially considering it will be their first DVD. Check out the trailer below.

But that's not all. They just released a crappy new video for "Machine Shed Wrestling". There's not much to it, but I've seen worse. Watch it after the jump.

I have mixed feelings about it, but who knows. It could be good. That's it. Nothing else. Things are pretty slow here.
