Breakfast of the Gods

I made mention of this in my post on Cap'n Crunch but it deserves its own post. If you have not checked out this comic yet, go now!
It is one of the coolest comics I have seen online or otherwise. In nearly every panel a new breakfast icon in unveiled until the climatic final battle of epic proportions.

The End of the World? Even for Cockroaches?

For those of you who do not know, I am in seminary, but it is not like you think. I am not on a mission to make converts for the Army of God. Rather I am here to recruit for Jesus’s Navy, which is way cooler, with better hats. Anyway in my ongoing quest to bring pop culture into religion and religion into pop culture, this week we are talking Apocalypse.

Apocalyptic writing was really popular around the time of Jesus from about 200 BC to 200 AD. It featured revelations where people would be recued from the shit sandwich situation that they were in by a divine presence that would judge the evil save the righteous. If you were a subject of Greco-Roman rule you’d want to be saved too. After all, they feed people to lions and nail them to trees. It is during this time that most of the New Testament was written including the book of Revelation.

Fast forward to the present day. People still think that this apocalypse is right around the corner. The world has been perpetually ending for 2000 years, so we must be getting close right? With this in mind let’s watch some music videos. YAY!

Got to start with the theme song for the Apocalypse. Don’t forget to yell out Leonard Bernstein.

Okay, now let’s get serious. Tool serious. In 1996 Tool released this song about the destruction of L.A. brought about a vengeful Mother Nature who he calls Mom. The term Aenima is a play on the concept of an enema (flushing it all away) and the theological concept of anima which is best described as a soul. The lyrics are really cool. The video? Well, its tool so get ready for some creepy animation.

Depressed? Angry? Hey the Apocalypse is not all that bad. Prince has a good plan, dance. Remember when all Prince cared about was dancing and having a good time, even in the face of a nuclear meltdown? Those were the days. In 1983, the concept of 1999 seemed a long way off. Unimaginable even. Then, it came and went and nothing really happened. This was a common problem 2000 years ago when grand predictions of the Second Coming never happened. It killed the genre of apocalyptic literature, and continues to bring about anti-climatic New Year’s parties. Which just goes to show you how ridiculous fearing the Apocalypse is. Still, like Prince instructs, we should forget our worries and Get It On. Awwww yeah.

Band To Check Out: Goes Cube

Just found out about this cool band from NYC called Goes Cube. Cool sound, I hear a little Fugazi, and a little Helmet as well. Maybe a little old Nirvana in there too. Anyway you can check them out on their Myspace. They have a record coming out in a week called Another Day Has Passed. And, because I like you, I'm posting their video for "Song 30". Because that's the type of guy I am.

Hey Kids...It's Random Video's Time!!!

Okay, lets get it started. The Electric Angels. Of course you remember them. Anyway, here's a little "Rattlesnake Kisses" for that ass. See if you can spot the famous actress dancing in the video. Here's a hint: It's not Bea Arthur (too soon?).

And now for something COMPLETELY different. Yes, kids, it's Crowbar. I always dug this song. Soooo sloooow. And so incredible. Not much to the video, but there really doesn't have to be.

Okay, it's the grand finale ladies and gents. We're gonna end this with a little Ratt. Why? Because it's RATT!!!! This is the video for "Back For More". I loved Ratt as a kid. Not only do you get Tawny Kitaen, but check out the 2 cops in the middle of the video. Enjoy!

The 5th Of May

Cinco De Mayo!! But more important than all that is that it's our own Non-Roster Invitee's birthday today. So why don't we celebrate as only we can: For all our Spanish readers here's a video from an artist that probably set your people back 50 years or more. So have a shot, soak a cerveza and watch Gerardo's "Rico Suave" Wow, I'm an asshole.
