All Hail Phantasio!

Thank the good Lord for WWE Classics On Demand. Without it, I never would have seen what I saw today. To be honest, I thought I knew about every lame WWF gimmick wrestler that failed. Apparently not. This is Phantasio. Not only is he a wrestler, but he's also a magician! This thing got over like a fart in church, as this is Phantasio's one and only WWF match. Enjoy.

The Wrestling Screwjob. No Not That One, Another One

I saw this on Pro Wrestling Torch today and thought I'd do a little write up about it. We all know about the infamous Montreal Screwjob in 1997, don't we? Well before Vince McMahon screwed Bret Hart, he screwed Wendi Richter. Who was Wendi Richter you ask? Really, you don't know?

Well she was a women's wrestler in the old WWF at the start of the whole Rock N Wrestling phenomenon in the 1980's. She often had singer Cyndi Lauper in her corner. Anyway, Wendi was the WWF women's champion. And the rumour is she was a bit of a pain in Vince McMahon's ass, bugging him about more money. And as history has revealed, that's the last thing you want to do if you're trying to make it in the wrestling business.
So how did Vince fix this little problem of his? He booked Wendi in a match with a masked wrestler called The Spider Lady, who, after an awkward match, "pinned" Richter with a roll-up and took the title. Richter took the mask of the Spider Lady to reveal it was none other than Fabulous Moolah. Anyway, that was the end of Wendi Richter. As for Moolah, she would end up dropping that title to Sensational Sherrie a few years later and keep making appearances until her death last year.
Here's some footage of the match.

Great (And Not So Great) Musical Moments In Pro Wrestling History

Let's face it, music is a big part of pro wrestling. Now days everyone has their own song to come to the ring to. The song starts and the crowd knows who is coming out. But where did all this start. Well, alot of people say it was started by Michael Hayes and the Fabulous Freebirds in World Class Championship Wrestling in Texas. Now, that promotion is a whole post unto itself at some point, but the Freebirds used to come to the ring to, yeah you guessed it, "Freebird" by Lynyrd Skynyrd. The gimmick was that the Freebirds were a rock and roll band as well as being wrestlers. And what better way to prove that than performing your own song. Check out Michael P.S. Hayes performing "Badstreet". This is still perhaps the greatest entrance song ever in wrestling. Think I'm lying? Check it out.

Of course we must talk about the WWF. They released an album of wrestlers singing their own songs called Piledriver. From the Honky Tonk Man to Slick, wrestler got behind the mic with predictably awful results. But that's just how the WWF was at the time. Even Vince McMahon got into the act. Check out ol' Vinny Mac singing "Stand Back" thinking he's Neil Diamond. Also check out Hulk Hogan playing bass. This one NEVER gets old.

And then there was WCW. There was a time when they were putting together some of the worst theme songs in existence. Songs about Ricky Steamboat being a humble family man, and Sting being uh well a man called Sting (Seriously, that's the best they could come up with?). Eventually things go a little better when they started ripping off Nirvana and Pearl Jam songs. Diamond Dallas Page had a them song that was a direct rip off of "Smells Like Teen Spirit". Want more: Of course not but here it comes. Raven had a song that was ripped off from "Come As You Are". It's really hard to believe Courtney Love didn't sue them. I guess this proves that she never watched wrestling.

I could probably go on and on, but I think I'll finish this up with a new song that's become a real favorite of mine. The tag team of Jesse and Festus come out to a song called "Biscuits and Gravy" that is so fucking catchy, you can't help but sing to yourself like a fucking retard. Which is what you have to be to enjoy this stupid sport we love called wrestling.

Santa's Twin Brother?

Santa Clause had an evil twin brother? Who knew? Evidently The WWF knew when they introduced him in 1995. Not surprisingly, he didn't stick around long. Just long enough to torment wrestling fans through the holidays.

Wrestling Commercials

I always heard about The Four Horsemen having their own brand of vitamins back in the day, but I never knew if it was true or not. Well, now we have proof. This is the actual commercial for them

So i was bored at work and kept searching for more wrestling commercials. And what did I find?

How about The American Dream Dusty Rhodes shilling some soda called Mello Yello

I've never heard of this soda but I'd be leary to try anything Dusty recomends. He wasn't exactly the picture of good health.
Want more, how about The Dingo Warrior for Westway Ford.

He would of course go on to become The Ultimate Warrior but this was when he was in Texas I believe. He actually did more of these. Scary thought.
Now lets end this madness with a classic: The WWF action figure spots. These were sort of like the Micro Machine ads, I guess cause Roddy Piper talked so damn fast.

So there you have it. I'm sure there's more but, you know, that's enough for now.
