Went to a show last monday night at Slims in da city. Saw Midnight Masses, Funeral Party and the main event ...And you will knows by the trail of dead. Yeah what a name for a band huh. As soon as i had my beer in hand Midnight Masses started the show with the song heaven. It starts as a drum circle a cappella thing (Its on their myspace page)
I dont want to throw this band under the bus but with lyrics like "I want to bathe in your addiction" (did I hear that right? if it was Gwen Stefani's bath water maybe) it wasnt doing it for me. They have a good sound and Thumbs Down said they would make a great insturmental band. Maybe I wasnt in the mood for that type rock or i'm just jaded but you make the call. Next up was Funeral Party. This band really were a change of pace to Midnight Masses. They brought alot of energy. I think I would enjoy this band more if I had just heard them through speakers instead of seeing them live. The vibe they threw off was very LA whatever that means right. Thumbs down said they would be right at home on a WB, 90210 teen show soundtrack. Even so i went to their myspace page and rocked out for a while to their tunes and looked for their album at street light. So i guess i liked them even if some of lyrics are hammy. If you like the Kooks but with more of a American edge (dont ask me going out on a limb on this) you might like this band. Here is the stand out song from their set and as the lead singer said "its a song about a girl"
After a short wait out came 6? maybe 7 members of Trail of Dead. You know they got 2 drummers. My ears are still ringing mind you. What can I say. I have been wanting to see this band live for days. This band is all over the place. They can rock out but also change it up and hit you with some melodies. A song like that that I had not heard because I didnt have the new album was Fields of Coal seen here
It was great seeing them live and I got to hear all the hits like Relative Ways, Will you smile again, and Another morning stoner. Trail of Dead put on a hell of a show and even had two encores that I am sure my ears will be paying for, for years to come, but well worth it. I will leave you with how the Trail of Dead show started by someone covering Trail of Dead's song "Invocation".
