Yeah I did it. And you know what? It felt great. If it was a normal band I would have gladly paid the money and purchased the album. (Isn't it funny how we still call them albums? Even as the times change, we can't change that. It just doesn't sound good to say, "hey I got the Stryper digital download"). But I just couldn't help myself. So how is it, you ask? Well, uh, it's, uh okay. I mean, look, it's not going to be MASTER OF PUPPETS ever again. Let's be honest. The band who made all those classic albums 20 plus years ago is dead and buried (Including Cliff Burton, literally). We just need to understand that. DEATH MAGNETIC was supposed to be a return to the old Metallica heaviness. Wel, it is and it isn't. Alot of the riffs feel like you've heard them before. James Hetfield's vocals aren't great. Lars is Lars. You can barely hear bassist Rob Trujillo (formerly of the incredible Suicidal Tendencies). But Kirk Hammitts guitars are pretty fuckin smokin'. He's the best part of DEATH MAGNETIC.
So all in all, the album isn't bad. Some of the songs are pretty good ("This Was Just Your Life", All Nightmare Long". Some, not so much. (The Unforgiven 3?!?!?! Really?) It's worth a listen. Don't agree with their choice of a first single with "The Day That Never Comes" but that's beside the point. If you're a lifelong Metallica fan, you'll probably like it. If you're old school, you may or may not. So give it a listen. Just don't pay for it.
