The cartoon was a Japanese anime from the 70's called Starblazers. It was dubbed for American kids in the 80's and I just ate it up because the whole show was set around the sunken WW2 Battle Ship the Yamato raised and turned into a space ship to defend the earth from aliens.(Usual fare aliens, ghost ship bad dubbing) I guess some of the cartoons in japan were made for adults like the Flintstones or Simpson's, because in the opening episode you have a major characters death. The first episode the crusty commander is getting his fleet destroyed by the aliens. There are only two battle ships left. The action is the same in the Japanese and American version but the dialogue is different. In the Japanese one the crusty captain orders wildstar to retreat and wildstar calls him a coward. Pretty harsh, while in the translated American version wildstar is sacrficing his life for the many. Either way wildstar doesn't die it just looks like it. Find out 20 episodes later he crash lands on some planet, knocks up the alien queen and the rest i forget.
